Yeah I posted the fivethirtyeight point. And the "soft coup" turned into a "hard coup" very fast. I for one am hoping against hope that the days of the Islamic "Republic" are numbered.

Well, Ahmedinijad does have paramilitary backers, who can claim at least one murder today.

As for the polling results you link to, I would suggest that your interpretation is an unsophisticated reading of the polling data. See fivethirtyeight.com for some nuance.

Also I think this "win" is an excellent thing for Israel, Egypt and the other US-backed forces in the region. An election of a moderate would've allowed Obama to engage with Iran more, maybe deferred their nuclear ambitions and thus comparatively weaken the power of US-backed client regimes in the Middle-East.

Yeah, I'm surprisingly largely with Yoshie on this one. That being said regardless of whether who really won the elections the surge of protests and activities is politicization in a depoliticized "post-revolutionary" society and thus should be applauded. As we saw in similar circumstances in Eastern Europe if some sort of oppositional core is formed in civil society, the ruling class of Iran is in trouble.

I think this reflects the MR Zine view of the Iranian regime, which I'm not sure I buy. Juan Cole seems to think the election was stolen and that the numbers aren't convincing: http://www.juancole.com/2009/06/stealing-iranian-election.html
