While I am in agreement with almost all the positions of Die Linke, I take issue with their considerable ties to the former GDR's Stasi. Gregor Gysi, Lothar Bisky, et. al. have too many ties to Egon Krenz and other former GDR officials who deny the brutality of the GDR regime. The last thing any of us democratic socialists want is a return to state-socialism or apologists for such a system being accepted as legitimate. For this reason I work within the SPD (i.e. Jusos and Forum DL21) to move it left and reject the policies of Schroeder and his ilk. For what I have seen in the "countryside" of Brandenburg, die Linke remain a protest party, lacking any real structure and consisting mainly of former SPD-members. I understand their frustration with the SPD's leadership, but breaking ranks is only going to help the CDU further consolidate its grasp on power. Before a deeper democracy is able to form in the wider world, working within center-left parties is essential to making liberal democracy more humane.
